Meet Senator Shanta Nagarkoti

Membership Engagement Director, Education Global Senate

Membership Engagement Director, Education Global Senate

From the peaceful hills of Shikharpa, Nepal, to an international high school community in Germany—and now to the Education Global Senate—Shanta Nagarkoti’s journey demonstrates what determination, education, and service can achieve.

Shanta grew up in Shikharpa, a beautiful but underserved village where most families depend on farming and access to quality education, healthcare, transportation, and other essential services remains limited. The local school struggled with too few teachers, inadequate classrooms, and insufficient learning materials. Seeking a better education meant making a long daily walk across the hills to attend school in the nearby town of Tikabhairav—often carrying a heavy school bag, but always carrying an even greater dream.

A transformative chapter in her journey began when Shanta attended United World College Robert Bosch College for high school. Entering a diverse international learning environment presented a major challenge: she had to develop her English-language skills within just two years while adapting to new academic, cultural, and social expectations.

Rather than retreating from the challenge, Shanta stepped beyond her comfort zone. The experience strengthened her confidence, resilience, and ability to connect with people from different cultures. Most importantly, it helped her discover strengths she had not previously recognized in herself. What initially seemed like an overwhelming language barrier became a powerful lesson in courage, adaptability, and personal growth.

As Shanta advanced in her education, she became increasingly aware of the deep divide between children in rural communities and those in cities with stronger schools, modern technology, and greater opportunities. Her international education further demonstrated what young people can accomplish when they receive the right support and opportunities. Instead of allowing inequality to discourage her, she transformed it into a personal mission: to help ensure that no child’s future is determined by where they are born or the language they initially speak.

Today, Senator Shanta Nagarkoti brings that spirit of resilience and service to the Education Global Senate. As Membership Engagement Director, she will welcome new members, strengthen relationships among senators, encourage meaningful participation, and help expand a global community united by education and service.

Her story reminds us that leadership does not begin with privilege—it begins with purpose. Sometimes, a journey that starts on a difficult village path, continues through an unfamiliar language and culture, and demands the courage to leave one’s comfort zone can lead toward meaningful global change.

We proudly welcome Senator Shanta Nagarkoti and invite others who share her commitment to educational opportunity to join the Education Global Senate. Together, we can turn individual experiences into collective action—and ensure that every learner has the opportunity to dream, grow, and succeed.
